The 1881 Bequest Society recently hosted a boutique event at Caulfield Grammar School to launch Dr Daryl Moran’s new book, First to Serve and Sacrifice. The book tells the untold story of the 28 Caulfield and Malvern Grammarians who served in the Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902), mapping out their school days, military journeys, and postwar lives. Notably, Dr Moran’s meticulous research uncovered three additional Grammarian casualties who will now be added to the school’s Honour Roll.
The launch featured prominent guest speakers, including military historian Dr Andrew Kilsby and author Peter Wilmot. Wilmot spoke movingly about his book Second Harvest, which chronicles the writings of Tom Stock (Grammarian 1896), the first Grammarian killed in the conflict at Pink Hill in 1900. Illustrated with over 40 photographs, this vital piece of school history concludes with a generous gesture, as Dr Moran has donated all book sale proceeds directly to the Caulfield Grammar School Foundation.
