Throwback Thursday: Show time in September – The Royal Agricultural Show. Do you remember going to the Melbourne Show? The excitement of the rides, show bags, junk food, agricultural and horticultural displays, and freedom to explore. One activity enjoyed by Form Three students was preparing and staying with the Cuming house pigs at the Show. The 1960 School Magazine reports that fourteen pigs were entered. Most successful was Cuming Prince III, who won first prize for a 9–16-month boar and third prize in the breeders’ group as well as awards of Senior Champion Boar, Best Wessex Saddleback Boar of the Show, and the Department of Agriculture Champion Certificate for a Wessex Saddleback of any age. #ThrowbackThursday #Archives #CaulfieldGrammarians #history

Throwback Thursday: 2005 A Theatrical Triumph - Watersky. Watersky, the musical theatre production was performed in 2005 to celebrate the opening of the Twin Halls. The elaborate work largely written by School Head of Theatre, Joachim Matschoss and Ross Brooks, and with a cast of over 150 students from all campuses from Year 2 to Year 12 and many past students. In 1999 a group of Year 10 students workshopped some ideas and after the Memorial Hall fire in 2000, the script grew to match the magnificent Twin Halls project. Teacher Ross Brooks and British composer, Matt Baker wrote the music and professional set designer Shaun Gurton, worked with students to design the sets. Throwback Thursday: 1996 - Joint Girls’ and Boys’ APS Athletics Championships. Caulfield won the girls’ and boys’ APS athletics premierships in the same year for the first time in 1996 and the achievement was enthusiastically celebrated. It was the first time that one school had won both the boys and the girls Challenge Cup. Throwback Thursday: 1995 - The Taekwondo Club and previous Judo Club. In 1995 a Taekwondo Club commenced teaching the Korean martial art at the Caulfield Campus in August 1995. It was introduced by teacher, Mr Peter Tselios and by 1996 the students were participating in two competitions and demonstrating the Korean martial art at the International Week assembly. Before this a Judo Club started in 1957 and in the early 1960s was led School Chaplain, Rev David Boan. Throwback Thursday: The God Squad - The Roar of Harley Davidsons. Do you remember the visit of the God Squad who visited the Caulfield and Wheelers Hill campus for “Re-connect ‘95’, held in the final week of Term 1, 1995?. The mission opened with the roar of the sound of Harley Davidsons as members of the God Squad presented the Christian option for living. Sessions were led by the Founder and Leader of the God Squad Leader, John Smith and David Fuller and Tony Cant who spoke about their faith and commitment to people. Encouraging students to “reconnect” every aspect of life within the school community – personal values and family relationships, living with integrity and balancing academic excellence and career aspirations. An evening session was held for parents. Since the late 1980s to 2006, The God Squad have spoken at assemblies, missions and religious education classes. #ThrowbackThursday #TBT #History #CGS

Throwback Thursday: 1984 - End of an Era. The Cadet Unit. In 1984 the Caulfield Grammar School Cadet Unit was disbanded when Government funding ceased. The Officers of the Cadets at time of disbandment in April 1984 were Major David Croome, Officer Commanding, Major Brian Smith, second in charge, and Captain Arthur Wearne, Adjutant. The Unit was formally established in 1885 as the fifth in order of foundation of Victorian schools which had raised cadet units. Its legacy remains an important part of the history and tradition of our School as the unit developed and was ably supported by students, teachers and alumni. #ThrowbackThursday #TBT #History #CGS

Throwback Thursday: Early morning adventures at Yarra Junction. In the late 1970s to early 1990s many students joined in the early morning run, known as the “Warbie Run’ down to the Warburton Highway and back, of 5 kilometres, first thing in the morning before 7’oclock. Students who completed the run signed their names in a special log book. Another challenge was known as the “Iceberg Club”, a challenge completed before 7 o’clock to submerge yourself in the Little Yarra River. The CGA Athletics Cross Country 2024 season is starting in April and we are looking for new runners to join our group. All levels of fitness and speed are welcome! 🏃♂️🏃♀️ The 12 race season runs from April – August over a variety of courses and distances from 5-10km. The CGFC is holding their Season Launch event on the 2nd of March. This is a whole community event for players, coaches, volunteers, families, potential new players, teachers, school coaches etc! Throwback Thursday: 1976 - The new Music House and Classrooms (Glenwootton). “Glen Wootton”, previously a junior boarding accommodation at the Caulfield Campus is renovated and turned into a Music House with spaces for teaching and rehearsal. Headmaster, Mr. Bruce Lumsden was keen to provide a dedicated music teaching space and he felt deeply about the value of music & art as part of the experiences that should form a boy's education. On Friday 24 September the School Concert was held at the Robert Blackwood Hall, Monash University with music ensembles, school band and performers from Malvern, Shaw House and the Senior campus. The choir conducted by Mr Norman Kaye sang several styles of music from Beethoven to the Beatles, with Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band, a perfect finale. #ThrowbackThursday #TBT #History #CGS

Kylie Cheah (Class of 2023) has been awarded a Music Composition Scholarship by Melbourne University. Kylie has a passion for composition and during her time at Wheelers Hill composed a number of pieces that were performed by CGS music ensembles. In 2023 Kylie’s composition Pasta Disaster was selected for performance at Top Class Music (composition). Throwback Thursday: 1971 - The first CGS Computer terminal. Caulfield Grammar was the first school in Australia to have a computer terminal installed for student use linked to large terminal at Honeywell Pty Limited. A Computer Programming Group was formed in the early 1970s as part of the Thursday activities programme led by Dr Alf Di Battista. In 1972, nine members of the Computer Science Activity Group entered the IBM Computer Project competition and were awarded first prize for their computer, the computer proudly shown in a photograph beside Michael Abramson (1963-72) and Dr Alf Di Battista, in 1972. #ThrowbackThursday #TBT #History #CGS

Several Long play recordings were made of the Choirs of Caulfield Grammar and Malvern Memorial school choir from 1966 to 1971 led by the Director of Music at Caulfield Grammar, Mr. Norman Kaye (Staff 1956-1976). Throwback Thursday: 1967 - Goodbye school Caps! Caulfield Grammar School Caps were abolished in 1967. This welcome announcement meant students no longer had to wear a cap whilst travelling to school or in public or going to church or special events. Enamel Badges, emblems or embroidery or covered button on caps indicated a leadership role such as Form captain, Prefect, School Officer or 1st sports team or colours award. #ThrowbackThursday #TBT #History #CGS

Throwback Thursday; Excitement of the Opening of the new Memorial Hall. Opening of the first School Hall dedicated as the War Memorial Hall in 1958. Cadet Unit provides Ceremonial Guard of Honour at the opening of the School War Memorial Hall, inspected by His Excellency, the Governor, Sir Dallas Brooks. Staged in 1958 is the world premiere of the CGS musical, ‘Bullumbimbi’, a one act and one hour musical, written by staff, Mr Norman Kaye and Mr Bill Callander. The new Hall complex is a modern building suitable for assemblies and performances and multi-purpose use. Foundation stone unveiled on April 27, 1957. #ThrowbackThursday #TBT #History #CGS

Throwback Thursday: Making a Splash with the launch of Rowing. Rowing, one of four premiership sports in the APS (the others being athletics, cricket and football) was introduced at the School in 1958 and Caulfield crews competed in the Head of the River Regatta for the first time in 1959. Mr Vic Nash, assisted by Mr Harold Pennefather, and Mr Philpott, launched the school into rowing and after a rough and story passage in Term One, when swimming rather than rowing applied, the crews learnt to sit in a boat in any weather! #ThrowbackThursday #TBT #History #CGS

Throwback Thursday: Basketball as a new House sport. Basketball was introduced as a house sport in 1954, the first a number of ‘new’ sports introduced in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s (e.g. rugby, hockey, soccer, squash) as an addition the five ‘traditional’ AGSV sports. Throwback Thursday: Annual Picnic and excursions for Boarders. In the 1950s an annual picnic saw boarders visit Mt. Martha. Weekend excursions included visits to Ancient Times House, Lake Mountain, the Melbourne Motor Show and Royal Agricultural Show. These experiences will create memories you’ll cherish forever.” 2023 Wheelers Hill Campus Co-Captain Luke Stonehouse-Melke shared at Speech Night how stepping outside your comfort zone and making the most of every opportunity has prepared him for the future. Luke was also one of our 38 VCE Scholars, placing in the top 2% of the state with an ATAR of 98 or more. Natasha Ekelmans 2023 School Co-Captain Caulfield Campus “Every experience you collect in your life comes together to paint the version of you that you are today … While success is a satisfying addition to life that deserves celebrating, it is not the pinnacle of our existence. It’s not often that you’re reminded to be proud of yourself for the way you’ve grown or evolved.” 2023 Caulfield Campus Co-Captain Natasha Ekelmans shared at Speech Night how the breadth and depth of her School experiences have shaped her. “I am proud to announce and congratulate our 2023 School Duces, twins Thomas Xiao and Timothy Xiao from Wheelers Hill Campus, who have achieved the highest possible ATAR of 99.95 – a remarkable achievement! This is the first time in Caulfield Grammar School’s 142-year history that siblings, let alone twins, have achieved Dux.
