CGA Affiliates Service Awards 2022

This year the 2022 CGA Affiliate Service Awards have been awarded to four deserving applicants from four different groups and sports. Each have contributed largely to the sport or club they participate in and continue to lead with values that the CGA recognise.

The winners this year are:

Damien Hennessy (Rowing)

Sarah Somes (Athletics)

Ashish Bhatt (Cricket)

Youssef Sabet (The CGA Theatre Project).

Damien Hennessy (Rowing)

Damien has been a member of the Rowing Club since 2015, after learning about the joys of rowing when participating in the CGS Pennefather Cup. In 2017 he joined the Committee and has been an active contributor to the Club and promoter of rowing ever since. He assumed the role of Safety Officer when appointed to the Committee and continues to undertake this role. He completes annual safety audits and ensures Club safety procedures are up to date and advertised. This role took on an even greater importance during the Covid pandemic. Damien ensured the Club was prepared and complied with the safety precautions imposed by the state government and rowing governing bodies. Recently he navigated the Club through the newly enacted child safety compliance requirements.

Sarah Somes (Athletics)

Sarah has made a significant contribution to the CGA Athletics/Cross Country Club over many years. She was the first president of the club and later the first female president of APSOC – the body that runs APS past students’ cross country. During the Covid pandemic she managed this association through some difficult times and some challenging issues. During 2022 Sarah represented the CGA on the race-day management team and was the timekeeper and results coordinator – a thankless task that nevertheless benefits all runners. Sarah has devoted a considerable amount of time to this role in 2022 and always maintained ‘grace under fire’. The club looks forward to her being back as a runner in the CGA team in 2023.

Ashish Bhatt (Cricket)

Ashish has been playing for the Cricket Club for over 10 years and in more recent times has been a valuable member of the leadership group. He has been vice-captain of one of the club’s teams for the past five years and has often stepped up to the captaincy role when the regular captain has been unavailable or injured. When the need arise he always steps in and gets the job done. As a member of the leadership group Ashish has shown initiative and commitment when it comes to helping at training and on game days. He is always willing to offer suggestions on how the club can be improved and can be relied upon whenever the club needs assistance.

Youssef Sabet (The CGA Theatre Project)

Youssef has been the key creative mind behind the establishment in 2022 of the CGA’s theatre group – The CGA Theatre Project. He is the President of the group and has been driving force behind getting productions on stage. Youssef has used his industry experience and passion for acting to inspire others in the group and set a high standard of performance. Put simply, The CGA Theatre Project would not be in existence without Youssef’s vision and hard work.
