On Tuesday 18 June, members of the Caulfield Grammar School Foundation and the 1881 Bequest Society enjoyed a rich cultural and historical experience at Trinity College, University of Melbourne. The visit was led by Dr Ben Thomas, Rusden Curator of Cultural Collections, whose knowledge and passion for the college made for a fascinating and engaging tour. The outing was followed by a warm and convivial lunch at the iconic Naughton’s Hotel.
Established in 1872, Trinity is the oldest residential college at the University of Melbourne, known for its deep traditions, vibrant student life, and academic excellence. The group explored some of its most historic buildings, including the Leeper Building and Cowan and Behan wings, and were given a unique insight into the college’s celebrated portrait collection—featuring works by notable Australian artists such as Arthur Boyd, Judy Cassab, and Yvette Coppersmith. The newly redeveloped A.C.C. Farran Hall, named in honour of alumnus Andrew Farran, showcases this collection in a refreshed and thoughtfully designed space that blends history with contemporary aesthetics.
Caulfield Grammar School shares meaningful ties with Trinity College. Among the most notable are Sir John Behan, Grammarian and Rhodes Scholar, who later became Warden of Trinity; and the Cripps family, whose legacy of philanthropy has supported both Caulfield Grammar and Trinity College through the Cripps Foundation. Thomas Cripps (Class of 1997), son of past parent Robert Cripps AM, now serves as Chairman of the Foundation, which has contributed to the restoration of the Trinity Chapel and Theological School.
The visit offered a wonderful opportunity to reflect on shared values and a commitment to education, leadership, and community service. Attendees left with a deeper appreciation for the heritage and future of both institutions.
