Geoffrey Barker

Long before he became a global pioneer in pediatric critical care, Geoff was a student at Caulfield Grammar School, attending from 1956 to 1959 and serving as a school prefect in his final year. The leadership, dedication, and character he showed during those formative years at CGS laid the foundation for an extraordinary life of service and impact.

From Caulfield to a Global Stage in Medicine

After completing his early training in anesthesia in Australia, Geoff made the momentous move to Toronto. There, he dedicated 30 years as a full-time Critical Care Physician at the Hospital for Sick Children, shaping the future of medicine as Chief of the department for two decades. Under his visionary guidance, the department’s fellowship training program blossomed into arguably the leading venue for pediatric critical care training anywhere in the world.

His academic leadership extended to the University of Toronto, where he served as Director of the Critical Care Program for five years. He was for a time a Professor at Toronto University and was one of the early pioneers and leaders in the conjoined twins surgical team. Geoff’s profound influence transcended borders: he was a founding President of the World Federation of Pediatric Intensive & Critical Care Societies.

Geoff’s monumental contributions were widely recognized across the globe:

  • Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Federation of Pediatric Intensive & Critical Care Societies.
  • Honorary Life Memberships from both the Canadian Critical Care Society and the Australian & New Zealand Intensive Care Society.
  • The Geoffrey A. Barker Chair in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, an endowed research chair established in his honor at the Hospital for Sick Children and the University of Toronto.
  • Professional credentials including MB, BS, FCICM, FANZCA, and FAAP.

A Legacy Remembered

To our fellow Caulfield Grammarians, Geoff’s journey from our school’s classrooms, gracing the Mills Oval to saving the lives of countless children across the globe is a profound source of pride. He carried the values of his youth throughout an exceptional career, leaving the world immeasurably better than he found it.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of esteemed Caulfield Grammarian, Dr. Geoffrey Arthur Barker, who passed away in Toronto on September 4, 2026.
