Charles Percy Abbott was born in Berrigan, New South Wales, and educated at Caulfield Grammar School (where he was School Dux in 1956) and the University of Melbourne, where he graduated in law. He played football with the University Blues and then with the Hawthorn Football Club, where he was a member of the 1961 Premiership Team. He joined the firm of Blake and Riggall (now Ashurst) and practised in London with Allen and Overy and in New York with White and Case. Growing up with horses, he started playing polo, which took him all over the world. His racehorse, Gurner’s Lane, won the Melbourne Cup in 1982. In 1985, he brought King Charles to Melbourne to play polo at Werribee Park.
