The 1881 Bequest Society and the Caulfield Grammar School Foundation were proud and delighted to celebrate the literary achievement of our distinguished Grammarian, Dr Daryl Moran 1969, who recently launched one of his latest books “In The Fight – Australians and the War in Burma, 1942 – 1945” which he coauthored with Dr Andrew Kilsby.
Daryl is the author of “Empire’s Noble Son” which tells the story of Lyle Buntine, son of former Principal W M Buntine. Lyle’s life was tragically cut short following his gallant service as a fighter pilot during the Battle of the Somme. His family preserved every letter, newspaper, article, photograph and artefact associated with his life and active service.
Daryl has a long history with Caulfield Grammar School; he was a staff member from 1981 until 1993.
He is also a writer and historian with over 40 years of experience in the field of education in Melbourne and India. He has broad experience as a senior educator and administrator, public speaker, and in leadership with Rotary International.
Daryl also has had a long interest in the military and especially in aviation war history, convening conferences concerned with Australian air power, in both world wars, for Military History & Heritage Victoria Inc.
He spoke to our current students at the special ANZAC Senior School assembly on the 24th of April. He acknowledged that it is the 80th Anniversary of the end of WW2 and referenced some of the important artefacts on the Caulfield campus that helped to remind us of the service and sacrifice of former students.
Following on from his Assembly address, Daryl then spoke to some of our alumni and past staff, he shared insights from his new book, and the journey behind its creation, including the years of research that went into the work highlighting the human stories behind the conflict and the strategic importance of the campaign in the larger context of the war in Asia and Australia’s contribution.
The event was a unique opportunity for our guests to engage with an esteemed historian and grammarian and to reconnect with the important legacy of our alumni.
Proceeds from the sale of his book were kindly donated to the Caulfield Grammar School Foundation.
We thank Daryl most sincerely for his time and generosity.
