Marsden & Archer Chapters Luncheon

The CGA recently held a combined Luncheon for the Marsden and Archer Chapters on Thursday 3 October. Archer members were able to appreciate the beauty of Malvern Campus and the Valentine Mansion; something different from looking out over the oval from the Lindsay Thompson Centre at Caulfield Campus. Our Marsden members also enjoyed showing their fellow Grammarians around a place that holds so many memories for them. Our Grammarians were warmly welcomed to the campus by Year 5 and 6 students. It was lovely to see the connection between current students and some of the old boys.    Chapter members also swapped stories about school days and hearing an update on current school activities from Principal Ashleigh Martin.   Thanks to archivist Judith Gibson who put together a wonderful display as...

The Road to Premier A

Radar’s Report: Having recently retired from writing footy match reports, I am moved to ‘come out of retirement’ following the magnificent second semi-final win that ensured participation in Premier A in 2020, during the much awaited centenary year of the club, and the subsequent, stunning and extraordinary performance in the Premier B Grand Final. On Saturday 7th September 2019, we were witness to a thrilling, hard won one point second semi-final win, that not only guaranteed CGFC entry to Premier A in 2020 in what will be a celebratory, milestone season but presented an opportunity to win another senior premiership. I must also mention the fantastic win by the ‘dirty thirds’, as they like to be known, coached by one of CGFC’s most passionate members, himself a senior premiership pl...

Shaw House Primary School Reunion

On Sunday 25 August over 100 past students, past staff members, past parents and other members of the school community attended a special reunion to commemorate 40 years since the closure of the Shaw House Primary School. The function was organised jointly by the School and the CGA. Shaw House operated as a preparatory school feeding the main school in Glen Eira Road from 1949 to 1979. The decision to open the Wheelers Hill Campus in 1981 led the School Council to rationalise facilities across the School and it was decided to close Shaw House at the end of the 1979 school year. Attendees at the reunion, held in The Cripps Centre (Memorial Hall) at Caulfield Campus, were welcomed by Director of Community Engagement Sue Sonego and Principal Ashleigh Martin, and then enjoyed some reminiscence...

Class of 2009 10-Year Reunion

It was wonderful to see one of our biggest ever groups at the Class of 2009 10-Year Reunion on Friday 31 May at the Cripps Centre. Over 140 guests attended include past Principal Stephen Newton and past staff member David Conly. Past students enjoyed an extensive archives display by School Archivist Judith Gibson, and heard from Jim Alexiades Head of Caulfield Campus who gave an update on changes within the School.  Thank you to all who attended and we look forward to seeing the Class of 2009 at another reunion in the future.

2019 Combined Chapter Luncheon

Our annual Combined Chapter Luncheon was held on Friday 1 March at The Gables in Malvern East. The usual venue for the luncheon — the Function Room of the Lindsay Thompson Sports and Physical Education Centre at Caulfield Campus — was not available this year due to the construction work on the new Aquatic Centre. More than 90 chapter members and guests attended what proved to be a very enjoyable function. CGA Executive Director Linda Sprott welcomed everyone and then handed over to CGA President Andrew Aitken, who provided the CGA Report. In his report, Andrew congratulated Archer Chapter member Dr David Burke on receiving an AM in the Australia Day Honours for “for significant service to medicine, particularly to brain injury rehabilitation, and to professional medical bodies”.      In hi...

2018 Christmas & Thank You Function

The CGA was delighted to host around 150 guests at our annual Christmas & Thank You Function this year on Tuesday 11th of December. We were lucky to have so many alumni, affiliates, supporters, friends and staff in the room including Principal, Mr Ashleigh Martin and Chair of School Council, Mr Jim Hayman. Attendees enjoyed entertainment by our talented The Fields Combo band, and the Grammarian Singers also helped everyone get into the Christmas spirit with some carols. Our caterer Toni Gledhill (from Antonietta’s Kitchen) who has been working with us all year made sure that everyone was well fed and went home with some Christmas pudding.    An important part of this event was the recognition of our 2018 Affiliate Service Award Winners. CGA President Andrew Ai...

2018 Archer Chapter Luncheon

Our October Archer Chapter Luncheon was held at the Caulfield RSL with over 50 Chapter members and guests in attendance. CGA Executive Director Linda Sprott and President Andrew Aitken welcomed us, with Andrew providing a comprehensive report on current CGA activities. We were honoured to have Principal Ashleigh Martin in attendance, along with Jim Hayman (President of School Council), Andrew Strooper (Vice-Principal), Sue Sonego (Director of Community Engagement) and Andrew Cole (Director of Advancement). In addition to providing an update on current school activities and plans for the future, Ashleigh departed from the usual script and provided Chapter members with an opportunity to relate some stories from their school days. A number of humorous anecdotes were the result. We also heard ...

A Night of Firsts

A box of papers was recently delivered to the Archives Centre. There was one small item of particular interest which marked a very important event in the history of Caulfield Grammar School. It was a menu card for the Caulfield Grammarians’ Association dinner, held at the Esplanade Hotel in St Kilda on Thursday 30th April, 1931. This was a particularly significant dinner because it was the first held after the school became a company just ten days earlier. One of the first members of the School Council, Mr Richard Ballard, was present. Mr Frank Archer, soon to be the first Headmaster to operate under the newly formed Council, was there along with Mr Walter Buntine, the Principal. Also, in attendance was Dr J.C.V. Behan (1894-95), Victoria’s first Rhodes Scholar, and a member of the School ...

CGA Report – August 2018

At the CGA Annual General Meeting held on 21 May, Andrew Aitken was elected President following the retirement of Chris Mathieson, who had completed two years in office. Emily Davis was elected Senior Vice-President while all other office-bearers were re-elected to their positions. We welcome Sarah Connell and Lachlan Van Styn as new members of the general committee for 2018/19. Both attended the Wheelers Hill Campus of our School. Sarah has served previously on the Committee, while Lachlan joins us for the first time. We look forward to their input over the next 12 months. At the AGM outgoing President Chris Mathieson proposed a motion to change the CGA insignia. Members were asked initially to vote on whether to change the insignia and the motion for change was approved with very strong...

New CGFC Co-Patron Announced

For the last 20 years, the Club has been benefited by the guidance of Stephen Newton, and in more recent times as Co-Patron, Liz Wilson. Since Liz’s passing at the start of last season, the Club has given a much consideration to who would be a candidate, someone who we could look to about our future, who shares our values and has a desire to see our football club be a place where women and men have equal opportunity. We are delighted to announce that the Principal of Caulfield Grammar School, Mr. Ashleigh Martin, has accepted our invitation to join with Stephen Newton as the Co-Patron of CGFC. This decision has the total support of Stephen, who is similarly delighted to have Ashleigh on board. For background: Ashleigh is the 10th Principal of the School, having commenced in this role in De...

2018 Combined Chapter Luncheon

The Combined Chapter Luncheon, held on Friday 2 March in the Function Room of the Lindsay Thompson Sports and Physical Education Centre at Caulfield Campus, was an outstanding success with over 80 chapter members and guests present. CGA Executive Director Linda Sprott welcomed everyone and handed over to Past President Jeremy Pyman who was standing in for CGA President, Chris Mathieson, who was out of Melbourne. Jeremy gave a summary of the achievements and activities of the CGA and congratulated Larry McNicol AM, Richard Marocco OAM and David Thomson OAM, on their Australia Day awards.
