The Road to Premier A

Radar’s Report: Having recently retired from writing footy match reports, I am moved to ‘come out of retirement’ following the magnificent second semi-final win that ensured participation in Premier A in 2020, during the much awaited centenary year of the club, and the subsequent, stunning and extraordinary performance in the Premier B Grand Final. On Saturday 7th September 2019, we were witness to a thrilling, hard won one point second semi-final win, that not only guaranteed CGFC entry to Premier A in 2020 in what will be a celebratory, milestone season but presented an opportunity to win another senior premiership. I must also mention the fantastic win by the ‘dirty thirds’, as they like to be known, coached by one of CGFC’s most passionate members, himself a senior premiership pl...

Class of 1979 40-Year Reunion

The Class of 1979 special 40-Year Reunion dinner was held at The Gables in Malvern East on Friday 26 July. For some of those present it was the first reunion they attended since leaving school 40 years ago. It was great to see past staff members David Conly, David Nettelbeck and John Raven also in attendance. The Class of 1979 enjoyed pre-dinner drinks while listening to student musicians from Caulfield Campus, who volunteered their time on the night. Many thanks to the students and Head of Strings Jason Leinkauf. Grammarians enjoyed a delightful 2-course dinner while hearing from CGA President Mr Andrew Aitken and Vice Principal Mr Andrew Strooper. Many of the attendees also enjoyed a wonderful display put together by School Archivist Judith Gibson. You can find all the pictures of the ev...

2019 Don Wirth Medal Winners

The CGA would like to congratulate our 2019 Don Wirth Medal winners, Michael Dakic, David Gregor, Chris Mathieson and Warwick Watson, for their outstanding service and support. MICHAEL DAKIC Michael Dakic has been an outstanding contributor to the culture and success of the Caulfield Grammarians Rowing Club (CGRC). Mike commenced his association with Caulfield Grammar in 1992 when the first of his five children attended Wheelers Hill campus. Mike joined the newly formed Rowing Club in 1994, after his son started rowing for Caulfield Grammar. As a founding member of the Rowing Club, Mike then took on the challenge of learning how to row. Mike became a committee member in 1995 and was appointed club boat man in 1999 — a position he held for the next 15 years. Mike’s rowing career blossomed,...

2019 Singapore & Kuala Lumpur International Reunions

Earlier this month we joined with the School in hosting a Community Event and International Reunion at the Singapore Cricket Club. This was a great success with those in attendance including a wonderful blend of past students, current and past parents, current and past staff members, future families and members of the School Executive.   This event was followed by a reunion in Kuala Lumpur at Colony a few days later that was also well attended by alumni and members of the School community. It was fantastic to see such a broad range of ages with alumni in the room.  Many of the past students in attendance enjoyed catching up with Head of Boarding Tim Gallop and Caulfield Campus International Students’ Co-Ordinator Peter Tselios.   School Council ...

2019 Combined Chapter Luncheon

Our annual Combined Chapter Luncheon was held on Friday 1 March at The Gables in Malvern East. The usual venue for the luncheon — the Function Room of the Lindsay Thompson Sports and Physical Education Centre at Caulfield Campus — was not available this year due to the construction work on the new Aquatic Centre. More than 90 chapter members and guests attended what proved to be a very enjoyable function. CGA Executive Director Linda Sprott welcomed everyone and then handed over to CGA President Andrew Aitken, who provided the CGA Report. In his report, Andrew congratulated Archer Chapter member Dr David Burke on receiving an AM in the Australia Day Honours for “for significant service to medicine, particularly to brain injury rehabilitation, and to professional medical bodies”.      In hi...

Long-term Grammarian – Lindsay Cuming

Lindsay Cuming attended Caulfield Grammar from 1936 to 1947. He gained his matriculation certificate in 1946. In that year he was a school officer (School Liaison), house secretary of Archer House, a member of the first eleven (premiers) and first eighteen, and a sergeant in the cadet corps. He returned to school in 1947 to complete matriculation Latin so that he could undertake a law degree at university. In 1947 he was a prefect, vice-captain of Archer House, won school colours for cricket, was a member of the premiership-winning first eleven, first eighteen and first tennis teams, and was made a cadet lieutenant in the cadet corps. After completing his schooling Lindsay’s involvement with Caulfield continued. He was a member of the Caulfield Grammarians’ Football Club under-19 team in 1...

Athletics Report – February 2019

The 2019 APSOC season is fast approaching with the season officially beginning in April. Our Athletics Open Men’s and Woman’s No 1 teams are again competing in division 1. We have a good group of regular runners combining well to be competitive at all levels, which saw us have considerable team and individual success last season. However, we are always happy to welcome new runners to our group. Runners can be Grammarians, family or friends. The APSOC competition caters for all levels from elite runners to social fitness joggers. The fixture of events slots in between the Athletics Victoria cross country season, so if you are already running in these events and want to run on the alternative weekends come and join us. Races vary from 5km to 8km over paths, trails, flat and the odd hill. APS...

2018 Affilate Service Awards

The CGA would like to congratulation all of our 2018 Affiliate Service Award Winners. These awards recognise significant, voluntary and consistent service throughout the year/season. Without the outstanding commitment of these dedicated individuals our Affiliate Clubs wouldn’t be as successful as they are.  Roger Creed (Grammarian Singers) Roger has given dedicated and passionate service to the Grammarian Singers as its musical direction since its inception in 2017. This has included innumerable hours of planning, research and preparation outside of rehearsal time; teaching, motivation and guidance of the singers; advice and input to the musical and strategic direction of the choir. Roger is the only member of the Grammarian Singers to have attended one hundred percent of rehearsals,...

Cricket Report – December 2018

The Caulfield Grammarians’/NCG Cricket Club is fielding three teams again this season, in the same grades as last season (Divisions 1 and 3 of the MCC Club XI competition, and Division 1 of the Cricket South Bayside One-Day competition). At the time of writing, the club had just completed round one of the 2018/19 season. Our team in Cricket Southern Bayside had a strong victory against Bayside Cricket Club, our MCC Division 1 side was defeated by Old Melburnians by eight wickets, and our third division team had a bye to start the season. Two of our three teams made finals last season (both of our Division 1 teams) and our expectations are to improve on that result this season. Whilst the Club will continue with three teams, as reported in the 2018 May edition of Labora, we are focused inte...

2018 Archer Chapter Luncheon

In addition to providing an update on current school activities and plans for the future, Ashleigh departed from the usual script and provided Chapter members with an opportunity to relate some stories from their school days. A number of humorous anecdotes were the result. We also heard ...
