Bowler, Cricketer & Footballer – Nigel Kendall

Nigel Kendall and his wife Annette are both members of the CGA’s lawn bowls team. The team plays regular matches against teams from other APS schools and the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) during the summer season (October to March) each year, culminating in the annual APS Past Students’ Bowls Tournament in late March. Nigel attended Caulfield Grammar School from 1946 to 1955, following his brother David, who attended from 1943 to 1953. During the early 1950s Caulfield achieved considerable success in sport, winning a number of Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria (AGSV) premierships. Nigel was a member of the premiership cricket teams in 1953 and 1954 and of the premiership football teams in 1954 and 1955. The 1955 football team was one of the strongest to ever represent the School, inclu...

Passionate Yachtsman – Ian Felsenthal

Ian Felsenthal attended Caulfield Grammar School from 1943 to 1946. In his final year at school he was a School Officer (magazine), Vice-Captain of Davies House, a member of the first eighteen, President of the Public Questions Society and President of the Yacht Club. He passed the Leaving Certificate at the end of 1946 in five subjects. Upon leaving school Ian Felsenthal joined the Vacuum Oil Company (Mobil), working first in Melbourne and later in the Northern Territory and country Victoria. In 1953 and 1954 he was the sales representative for the Latrobe Valley area working out of Sale, moving then to Traralgon as a distribution agent from 1955 to 1964. Ian was proprietor of the London Motel in Stawell from 1965 to 1969 and, on his return to Melbourne, was the proprietor of the import/r...

The Crabtree Family

The Crabtree family’s association with Caulfield Grammar School began when Walter Crabtree came to the School in 1930. Wal attended Caulfield State School after his family moved to Elsternwick, showing his football ability by being selected to play for Victoria in the State Schools’ Football Carnival. Moving to Caulfield Grammar in 1930, he was selected to play in the first eighteen at age 14 and kicked 35 goals as a forward in the last three games of the 1931 season. After leaving school, Wal worked for Brookland’s Accessories for a few years before joining A G Healing, where he was employed for over 30 years, eventually reaching management level. Nevertheless, he continued his involvement in the school community. Wal played some 300 games for the Caulfield Grammarians’ Football Club (CGF...

Lawn Bowls Club Report – July 2020

The 2019/20 bowls season commenced in October with monthly games played between Old Melburnians, Old Scotch, Old Wesley, MCC and Caulfield Grammarians. These games were played at the MCC Bowling Club greens at Swinburne Avenue and Glen Street in Hawthorn.  All games were competitive and played in a good spirit with the bowlers enjoying the traditional MCC Bowls Club afternoon tea of sandwiches and scones. The CGA team played consistently throughout the season with good performances from Bev Allen, Chris Warne, Graeme Lamb and Tony Bagnall. Regrettably, the last two games of the season, including the annual APS Past Students’ Bowls Tournament, had to be cancelled due to COVID-19. I would like to thank all bowlers for their efforts throughout the season and Tony Bagnall, in particular, for t...

Lawn Bowls Report – June 2019

Our 2018/19 Lawn Bowls season concluded with the annual APS Past Students Bowls Tournament at the Glen Waverley Bowls Club on Sunday 31 March. Prior to this tournament, we had enjoyed regular competitive matches (one a month) from October through to March. At least a dozen Grammarians represented us in each of these matches, the CGA team showing good form and recording a number of wins. Our opposition included teams from Old Scotch, Old Melburnians, Old Wesley, MCC and the Melbourne Bowling Club. We were pleased to welcome five new bowlers to our ranks this season (Jan Geyer, Ted Geyer, Dean Harding, Ken Dowling and Daryl Moran), who all add strength to our team. Eight of the APS schools entered teams of 16 bowlers in the APS tournament. Our team started magnificently with each of our four...

Lawn Bowls Report – December 2018

Our season commenced in early October with the first game played on the beautiful greens at the MCC Bowls Club in Hawthorn. Most of the games will be played at MCC Hawthorn this season. The Grammarians were opposed by old foes in Old Scotch and Old Melburnians. All games were keenly fought out with close results. Caulfield’s best rink on the day was ably skipped by Tony Bagnall and was well supported by Bob Loader (on loan from MCC), Jan Geyer and Bev Allen, who finished eight shots up. We welcomed three new bowlers to our ranks, Jan Geyer, Ted Geyer and Dean Harding, who I am sure will add strength to our team. We are always looking for new bowlers to join us. Male or female bowlers who are past students or are the parents or grandparents of past and present students, would be most welcom...

Lawn Bowls Report – August 2018

On 25 March at the Glen Waverley Bowling Club, the CGA team was unable to repeat last year’s great effort in winning the APS Past Student’s Bowls Tournament. Nevertheless, every bowler put in a great effort and performed well on the day. The results of many games were close, and we finished in a creditable fourth position — Carey taking out the title this year. Caulfield’s best rink was skipped by Scott Wellington supported by Chris Warne, Eliza Wellington and Malcolm Finlayson; each received a trophy for their efforts. Our last game for the season was played at the MCC greens at Swinburne Avenue, Hawthorn, where we were pitted against MCC and Old Melburnians. Caulfield’s best rink on the day was skipped by Tony Bagnall, who bowled well in his first appearance as a skipper; he was ably sup...
