Finding your ‘best fit’ career

In our career coaching work at Relaunch Me, our mission is to help people identify their ‘best fit’ career; that is, a career aligned to their personality type and core values, utilises their key strengths and provides content that they are genuinely interested in. In addition, a ‘best fit’ career naturally also needs to meet their financial and lifestyle goals. Is this easy to achieve? Definitely not – but the first step to finding more meaningful work is a thorough self-assessment to understand what you are good at, what you are interested in, what you need to earn and what is most important to you. Are you ‘Career Fit’?

In the past twelve months, a significant portion of the Victorian workforce experienced a ‘career bump’ for the very first time. A career bump is any negative impact on your career that comes unexpectedly, such as a job loss, redundancy, demotion or a missed promotion. Covid-19 made a big dent on the Victorian employment market with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) modelling showing that the City of Melbourne alone was likely to shed 75K jobs in 2020. Employees who were in long-term jobs considered “safe and secure” were suddenly unemployed with no advertised roles to even apply for. This was particularly so in industries most impacted, including travel, events, tourism, retail and hospitality, however, the ripple effect was far and wide. These job losses came as a huge shock to many people, b...
