Alumni Conversations – September

Every month we will be sending an Alumni Conversation to your inbox. Alumni Conversations are short video interviews featuring our Grammarians reminiscing about their time at School, their favorite memory and what Caulfield means to them. These interviews come from a range of different sources and cover the diverse cultural, sporting and social life of our community. They relate directly to our strategic priority of Telling Our Story (celebrate our alumni and their achievements, develop communications that are personal and authentic). We are proud to be sharing these stories with you and hope that you enjoy watching them. A Story of Mateship – Andrew Brandt

Just a short tale about a bunch of old Grammarians who I believe displayed the best values one can gain from a period of education at Caulfield Grammar School. Sadly, one of our mates Andrew ‘AB’ Brandt (1977) recently lost his battle with cancer. He passed away alone, due to COVID -19 restrictions at the Creswick Hospital. Andrew was lucky that he, and multiple Caulfield guardians, were able to get him into that hospital where he was treated with kindness and respect. Much can be said of Andrew and his life. Andrew Brandt was a successful model and chef, working in many restaurants and acting in some classic Australian films. He had the gift of the gab and was a customer service representative for a tyre company. This role saw Andrew travel for months at a time from Victoria t...

The Crabtree Family

The Crabtree family’s association with Caulfield Grammar School began when Walter Crabtree came to the School in 1930. Wal attended Caulfield State School after his family moved to Elsternwick, showing his football ability by being selected to play for Victoria in the State Schools’ Football Carnival. Moving to Caulfield Grammar in 1930, he was selected to play in the first eighteen at age 14 and kicked 35 goals as a forward in the last three games of the 1931 season. After leaving school, Wal worked for Brookland’s Accessories for a few years before joining A G Healing, where he was employed for over 30 years, eventually reaching management level. Nevertheless, he continued his involvement in the school community. Wal played some 300 games for the Caulfield Grammarians’ Football Club (CGF...

Football Fanatic – Grace Buchan

Australian Rules Football helps unite people across our nation from all different backgrounds and, with the growth of the women’s game, Aussie Rules is now enjoyed by both female and male players. Playing professionally is a major honour, one Grace Buchan (Class of 2013) was granted following years of hard work and persistence. In 2018 Grace played in Collingwood’s inaugural VFLW side and in 2019 she was co-captain of the team. Grace’s devotion to her club, coach and teammates helped lead her team to premiership success last season. In her football career, Grace loves leading by example and encouraging others to push their physical and mental limits on the field and in their everyday life. She knows that success comes as a direct result of making sacrifices both at training and in competit...

2nd Female President – Emily Davis

Emily Davis graduated from Caulfield Grammar School in 2012 and served as school Co-Captain in her final year. Some of her fondest memories are the times she spent with friends and the special moment when classmate Aiyana Roberts sung to a full Valedictory Assembly; ‘there was not a dry eye in sight!’ One of the best parts of Emily’s time at school are the strong, lasting relationships and connections she built with her classmates and the broader community. After graduating, Emily commenced a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing and Management at Monash University. As part of this degree she completed an intensive three-week language course at Monash’s Campus in Prato, Italy with friend and fellow Grammarian Rebecca Small. Emily also undertook an exchange program at Simon Fraser University in Va...

Class of 1985 35-Year Reunion

Around 30 class members attended the 35-year reunion for the Class of 1985, held in the Archer Room at the Botanical Hotel in South Yarra on Friday 13 March. A number of those in attendance travelled from interstate, including Paul Chambers, Andrew Cox, Jeremy Morton, Tim Steen and Nigel McNay. Everyone enjoyed a relaxed evening catching up on current news and reminiscing about schooldays. Drinks and finger food were served. The Archer Room provided a perfect venue for such a gathering and the CGA looks forward to using the Botanical Hotel in the future for off-site reunions. The Class of 1985 was the last class to graduate from the School that included only males and only students from Caulfield Campus. One of the highlights of the 1985 school year was the School’s first win in the APS Bo...

The Class of 1979 special 40-Year Reunion dinner was held at The Gables in Malvern East on Friday 26 July. For some of those present it was the first reunion they attended since leaving school 40 years ago. It was great to see past staff members David Conly, David Nettelbeck and John Raven also in attendance. The Class of 1979 enjoyed pre-dinner drinks while listening to student musicians from Caulfield Campus, who volunteered their time on the night. Many thanks to the students and Head of Strings Jason Leinkauf. Grammarians enjoyed a delightful 2-course dinner while hearing from CGA President Mr Andrew Aitken and Vice Principal Mr Andrew Strooper. Class of 1999 20-Year Reunion

It was fantastic to have almost 100 alumni at the Class of 1999 20-Year Reunion on Friday 19 July at the Cripps Centre. This is a record number for a 20 year out reunion. Grammarians enjoyed catching up with past staff members Tony and Wendy McRae. Some of the past students also wrote some notes to Head of Art Mr Ross Brooks who they remembered fondly. You can find all of the photos from the night on our Instagram and Facebook pages. Thank you to everyone who came and we hope to see you at the 25-Year Reunion.
