In a first for the CGA, a ‘virtual reunion’ was held for members of the Class of 1995 via Zoom on Friday 22 May. The virtual reunion replaced the face-to-face reunion that was scheduled on that night but couldn’t go ahead due to COVID-19 restrictions. A face-to-face reunion to celebrate 25 years since this class graduated from CGS will still be held but at a later date, probably in 2021.
More than 20 class of 1995 members joined in the virtual reunion with at least three connecting from overseas – Geoff Richards from the UK, Belinda Hyland from Ireland and Sharna Heinjus from Spain. A number of others connected from outside Melbourne, including some from interstate. Past and present staff members Phil De Young, Daryl Moran, Russell Jackson, Ross Nankervis and Gary Tyler also joined in.
After a brief welcome to the whole group from CGA Executive Director Linda Sprott, class of 1995 members and guests were placed in break-out groups of six or seven. These groups were together for about 10 minutes before new groups were formed. There were a number of group changes during the evening, which provided class members with an opportunity to interact with most of their peers in a small-group format. Everyone joined together again after about an hour to give their impressions on the night and say farewell.
The overall response to the virtual reunion was very positive and one of its advantages was that those who live away from Melbourne, and may not have been able to participate in the face-to-face reunion, could renew acquaintances with their peers.
Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, and the need to restrict the use of school facilities in the coming months to activities involved specifically with teaching and learning, the CGA has scheduled a number of other virtual reunions during the remainder of 2020. We look forward to resuming our full face-to-face reunion program in 2021, including scheduling face-to-face reunions for those groups who may miss out this year.
