As we head into Christmas, we should have a much stronger understanding of what the 2021 VAFA season will look like. Regardless of what hurdles there might be, however, we are well positioned to tackle them and the competition each of our teams will face in Premier Grade. While this year has been like no other, we are pleased that a majority of the coaching panel, who delivered us a record three premierships in 2019, will be continuing in 2021: Simon Williams (Senior Men’s); Mitch Dupljanin (Senior Women’s); Marcel Bruin (Senior Assistant Men’s); Seb Gotch (Reserves Men’s); Patrick Kennedy (Under 19s) and Jeff Scotland (Football Operations/Chairman of Selectors)
We have some committee changes with President Peter Small stepping down after five tremendous years of rebuilding our Club. On behalf of the CGFC community, we cannot thank Pete and his family (Julia, Tom, Zoe & James) enough for their service and marvel at all that has been achieved in that time. Another tireless committee member Janee McEvoy is also stepping down. This will leave a huge gap and one which will likely take more than a few people to help fill. Finally, the founder and driving force behind our women’s team Neil Slonim is stepping aside after building the women’s program into something we are very proud of. While all three will no longer serve in official roles, they will still be around the Club providing assistance, guidance and a little wisdom.
While we didn’t manage to play a game in 2020, the playing groups have remained remarkably connected and are raring to start preseason, once the authorities give us the go-ahead. We are looking forward to the Class of 2020 bolstering our numbers and providing them the opportunity to play the game they love with their mates. The core of our success in recent years has been the ongoing development of school leavers into senior players and the Club is proud that a number have gone onto play VFL, VFLW and AFLW. We have also been active in bringing in some quality individuals to assist in the development of our alumni and in 2021 we look forward to Brett Eddy and Jono Rourke making their debuts in the blue and white.
Our social media platforms continue to be a great way to keep connected with the Club. This year’s Podcasts (with guests including Chris Judd, Brendon Goddard, Dylan Shiel and Cal Sinclair) have been fun and entertaining. Please continue to go to our website and social media platforms for news on club activities and events.
We plan to celebrate the Club’s centenary in 2021. You will hear more about what is planned in due course. We thank our partners and sponsors, and our volunteers, players, coaches and supporters, for sticking with us this year. Businesses have gone through a tough time and supporting those who have supported our community so well is the least we can do.
Finally a big thank to our Co-Patrons, Stephen Newton and Ashleigh Martin, for their continued guidance, and to our Committee, who have worked hard to ensure the Club runs smoothly.
Will Bowes (CGFC President)
